In the summer of 1619, the first Africans were brought to Jamestown, Virginia not to live as free settlers but as subordinate slaves. They worked strenuously for Whites, who considered themselves superior to Africans, without much benefit. Racism is not just the belief that one race is superior to others, but the act of negatively identifying individuals based on the color of their skin. Attributing race to individual character has proven to have negative implications that are difficult to mend. There have been different approaches to rectify the effects of racism dating back even before the Civil War. One of the fruition of these attempts is Affirmative Action, which was initially enforced â€Å"to ensure equality in hiring† among minorities. Later, Affirmative Action was amended to include education under its protection. Throughout its duration, however, it has alleviated the racial tension unsubstantially. Affirmative Action’s attempt to halt the racial disparities i n higher education that has burdened the African Americans constitutes an inconsequential solution: It forges the same environment suffering the struggle it has been trying to eradicate. This week in clinical I had my first real labor and delivery experience. My patient, RW, was admitted for pre-Eclampsia and headache. She was my first patient to be married and older than me, so my experience was a little different. One of the most striking complications of her pregnancy was her obesity. She had a BMI of 49. 89, which complicated her FHR monitoring, mobility, and labor progression. RW had also had back surgery which was complicated by osteomyelitis, so she would not be able to receive an epidural if the need for a Cesarean delivery arose. If she needed anesthesia, she would have to have general anesthesia. Other complications of pregnancy included her HSV infection from May 2010, her rubella nonimmunity, her history of abuse, and her lack of steady income. Despite all of these problems, the patient’s morale was incredible. She was positive about her pregnancy throughout the entire day even though she experienced a lot of pain. The nurse, Lindsey, was in charge of slowly pulling the inflated catheter out. By the time Lindsey was able to pull out the catheter, the patient would be dilated to 5 centimeters. As Lindsey pointed out, these methods were very â€Å"primitive,† but they certainly got the job done. I really enjoyed working with Lindsey. She was very knowledgeable and always tried to include me in whatever intervention she was performing. I was especially impressed by her relationship with the patient. I would have thought that she and the patient had known each other for years when I first saw them interact. In reality, she had only known the patient for about 48 hours. She really put the patient at ease and opened lines for communication. I hope that I can do the same in my nursing career. Overall, I enjoyed my day in labor and delivery. I learned how to prioritize problem lists for each patient and I got to see a great example of patient-nurse relationships.

Merriam-Webster defines Neo-liberalism as a liberal who de-emphasizes traditional liberal doctrines in order to seek progress by more pragmatic methods. Liberalism can refer to any social, economic, or even religious idea, whereas neo refers to a new form of an idea. The first type of liberalism gained recognition in Europe in 1776 by Adam Smith when he published his classic novel, The Wealth of Nations. Smith, along with others, advocated for the abolition of government intervention in economic matters. These included no restrictions on manufacturing, no barriers to commerce, no tariffs, but instead free trade and open competition. These economic ideas were considered liberal since no controls and individualism was encouraged. This however, only led to capitalists making huge profits. Until the Great Depression in 1929, economic liberalism prevailed in the United States. Using the Great Depression as his stepping-stone, John Maynard Keynes challenged liberalism as the best policy for capitalism. He stated that for capitalism to grow, full employment must be achieved.
